- I recently purchased a Supra 288i Plug and Play modem that was supposed
- to be easily installed on Windows 3.11 using the software that came with
- the modem. It took me 3 tries to install the software although I
- believe it really never installed properly. The modem software assigned
- itself to COM3 that had an IRQ in conflict with something else on the
- computer. Now comes the real problem. I tried for days and days to
- reach Supra's Technical Support Line but it was ALWAYS busy. I finally
- tried faxing and e-mail. I did receive a response back on the FAX after
- about 2 days with a suggestion that did not work. This went on for over
- a week with a total of 6 FAXs back and forth with none of their
- suggestions working. After a week I received a response to the e-mail
- which basically said the same thing as the first FAX from them and it,
- of course, did not work. I finally was able to reach somebody from
- Customer (not Technical) Support. I told him of my problem and asked if
- he could arrange to have somebody call me. Two days later a call was
- received by my wife while I was not home and she asked the gentleman if
- he could call back later. He said he couldn't because he was going off
- duty. She then asked if somebody else could call instead and he said
- that could not be done (with no explanation why). I then sent an e-mail
- to the Technical Support Manager explaining to him what happended and
- no reply from him was ever received. In frustration I returned to the
- modem to the retailer in exchange for a U.S. Robotics 288 Plug and Play
- (Windows 95 only). This modem still used dip switches for Windows 3.11
- with the factory default to COM2 IRQ3 which was the location of the
- modem that originally came installed on the computer. The installation
- went smoothly from the beginning and the modem has been working fine
- since.
-
- I think the facts of this note speaks for itself and you can draw your
- own conclusions. I am curious though, has anybody else experienced
- similar problems with that particular modem and/or Supra's Technical
- Support?
